“thinking of you!”
You know that image they show you at the eye doctor? The annual eye exam? The little hot air balloon? You pull your seat up to the edge of a cold chunk of metal and the skin of your chin meets a piece of plastic to rest on. Your eyes meet a lens and you see a tiny, red hot air balloon forming in a patch of grass greener than any field you’ve ever walked through.
I look through your eyes and I see a flower blossom in it as you approach my concrete steps.
Your image is crystal clear. I don’t need my glasses with you.
The background fades into the distance as your lips meet mine and the world grows silent.
The dewy air pushes our hands and bodies together.
Tonight
we become one
like we do
every time.
My vision gets sharp just to center you in my world.
My chest warms just to keep you out of the cold.
And within a second, your hands wrap around mine and my muscles know to rip themselves apart to grow strong enough to wrap around you.
May you never walk alone again.
—————
I’ve been setting the table for you every night
Eager for you to show up and you never do
I have replayed every memory I have of you over and over again.
I will never grow tired of seeing you if only in my dreams.
